Directory Information

“Regarding student records, federal law requires that ‘directory information’ on my child be released by the District to anyone who requests it unless I object in writing to the release of any or all information.  This objection must be filed within ten days of the time this handbook was given to my child.  Directory information ordinarily includes the student’s name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, photographs, dated of attendance, awards received in school, and most recent previous school attended.”

ACADEMICS (click on name to go back to Table of Contents)

A student must earn twenty-two credits to be eligible to receive a NTCHS Diploma.  Completion of a course is 60 per cent mastery and attendance to include not more than 10 absences per semester.  The following units are the minimum requirements to graduate from NTCHS: four English, two math, two science, three social studies, two physical education, one vocational, one-half keyboarding, one fine arts and six and one-half units of electives.

Students must take a minimum of 6 classes. Seven classes are recommended. Being a teacher aide does not count as one of the 6 classes.

The valedictorian will be the student(s) with the highest four year average and the salutatorian will be the student(s) with the second highest four year average.  The valedictorian and salutatorian are selected after the third quarter of their senior year.  The valedictorian and salutatorian must have attended NTCHS as a junior and senior.  All seniors with an average of 3.5 or higher at the end of the third nine week quarter will be recognized as honor students.  The grading scale:

A = 4.00 94-100% C+ = 2.33 77-79% D- = .67 60-63%
A- = 3.67 90-93% C = 2.00 74-76% F = .00 59% or Below
B+ = 3.33 87-89% C- = 1.67 70-73% P = Pass
B = 3.00 84-86% D+ = 1.33 67-69% I = Incomplete
B- = 2.67 80-83% D = 1.00 64-66%

HONOR ROLL

Students with a grade point average of 3.67 to 4.00 will be on the Gold Refiner Honor Roll and a student with a grade point average of 3.31 to 3.66 will be on the Silver Refiner Honor Roll, and a student with a grade point average of 3.0 to 3.30 will be on the Bronze Refiner Honor Roll. An F disqualifies a student from Honor Roll consideration. Student Aide grades are not part of a students GPA or Honor Roll consideration.

ACTIVITY FEE

All students will pay a $25.00 activity fee which covers programs, speakers, home sport activities, etc.  This is an incidental fee and reasonably related to goods and services provided in the program.  An activity ticket must be purchased before students are allowed entrance to any athletic contest, including participants (player, band, concessions, etc.).  Adult season tickets are $50 and a family ticket is $125.00.  A family ticket allows the entire household to both elementary and high school activities.  (household are those living in the same house)

ASSEMBLIES

Students will sit in prearranged seating order at all assemblies.  This will keep classes together and will help in keeping attendance procedures.  Students will sit in alphabetical order starting with the seniors in the first row, juniors in the second row, sophomores in the third row and the freshmen in the fourth row.  Students are expected to follow the seating arrangement and follow behavior standards.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular school attendance is essential for the student to make the most of his or her education, to benefit from teacher led activities, to build each day’s learning on that of the previous, and to grow as an individual.

A student between the ages of 7 and 16 must attend school unless the student is otherwise legally exempted or excused.  A student who voluntarily attends or enrolls after his or her sixteenth birthday is required to attend each school day.

Class time is important.  Doctor’s appointments should be scheduled, if possible, at a time when the student will not miss instructional time.

Parents need to call the school if a student is going to be absent or was absent.  This needs to be done as soon as possible, not later that 3:30 on the first day of the absence.  An unexcused absence will be the result of not calling.  Upon returning to school, students are to come to the office for a makeup slip.  Give the slip to each of your teachers of classes you have missed.  Return the completed slip to the office by 3:30.  Students will generally have one day more than the number of days absent to complete make up work.  Teachers have the option to extend this time if they feel it is justified.

Any student who has 10 or more unexcused absences in a class during the semester will receive a failing semester grade in that class.  Students earning a failing grade due to absences will receive either a 59% or their grade, whichever is lower, for the semester grade.

Students need to fill out a pre-arranged make-up sheet when they know they will be gone on a given day(s).  Teachers are not required to allow make-up work for absences that should be pre-arranged.

Excused absences may include: May not count towards the 10 day rule

1.  Illness

2.  Serious illness or death in immediate family

3.  Regularly scheduled medical or dental appointments

4.  Requirements to satisfy the law

5.  Participating in school related activities

6.  Emergency situations approved by the superintendent

Unexcused absences may include: May count towards the 10 day rule

1.  Family trips

2.  Work Days

3.  Vacations

4.  Visiting friends or relatives

5.  All suspensions - in or out of school

6.  Watching tournaments when not a participant

7.  Hair appointment

8.  Photography appointments

9.  Hunting, skiing, concerts, shopping etc.

          10.  Parent not calling in for student absence by 3:30

TARDIES (T) - Students are allowed 3 tardies per quarter for emergencies, etc. Students will serve 30 minutes detention for each tardy beginning with the fourth tardy of each quarter. Students missing just the beginning of the morning or afternoon will be charged with tardy as well as an absence for classes missed. Detention takes preference over practices for an activity!

ACTIVITIES

Each student participating in any regularly scheduled extracurricular activity is by nature of the activity a representative of their home community.  Participation is a privilege for those meeting minimum standards of academic performance.  Students planning to participate through interscholastic competition and inter-scholastic meetings or conventions must meet and maintain the following eligibility standards and procedures:

1.  Regular school attendance at scheduled practices or meetings of the activity or group.

2.  Four half credits earned the previous semester.  Eligibility for fall activities means that a student must have earned four half credits during the previous semester.  Failure to meet this standard will make the student ineligible until the second semester.

3.  Student eligibility will be checked on a weekly basis, beginning with the fourth week of each semester.  Student grades will be figured from the beginning of the quarter.  Students must be passing in six classes.  Ineligible students will remain on this status for a period of one week after which they may be removed, providing they are doing sufficient passing work. Eligibility will run from Monday to Monday.

4.  Any student participating in school programs, including sports, music, FCCLA, ISI, etc., who knowingly possess or use alcohol, drugs, or tobacco, will be suspended from school sponsored activities for 45 school days for the first offense and a period of 90 days for any subsequent offense.  School days refer to the required 1080 student instruction hours (usually 180 days). The suspension will carry over to the following school year.

5.  Students are to ride to and from games in the transportation provided by the school unless a student’s parents/guardian takes the student home from the activity, or unless the student’s parents/guardian make prior arrangements with the principal.

6.  A student must be in school all day to be eligible to participate in a performance, practice or game that day.

7.  Approved dress jeans and sweaters or shirts with collars and sleeves are the preferred dress for away trips.  No shorts, t-shirts, sweats, half shirts, or baggy, faded, torn jeans are to be worn.  Practice dress - Sports bras must have a shirt or jersey over it and boys must wear a jersey or shirt also.

8.  Any student suspended from school activities will be ineligible for any activity. Students are not allowed on school property while on "out of school suspension."

9.  NTCHS offers the following activities: Band, choir, drama, dance, academic competitions, VB, BBB, GBB, FB, Boys Track & Girls Track, Girls Softball, Boys Golf, FCCLA, Student Council and National Honor Society.

BREAKS

There will be a five or six minute break in the morning and afternoon.

During the AM and PM breaks, students will remain either in the school or outside in front of the high school.  Students are not allowed to leave the front of the high school or go to their vehicle without permission.

BUSSES-TRANSPORTATION

Riding the bus is a privilege, not a right.  Safety is absolutely critical.  Conversations should be carried on quietly.  Wear clothing that is suitable for weather conditions.  You don’t know when you may have to vacate the bus and be at the mercy of the weather.

Students must stay back from the curb until the bus has come to a complete stop.

Students who participate in school-sponsored trips are required to use transportation provided by the school to and from the event, unless other arrangements have been approved by the principal and advisor.

Students are expected to assist District staff in ensuring that busses remain in good condition and that transportation is provided safely.  When riding school buses, students are held to behavioral standards established in this handbook.

Students must:

1.  Follow the driver’s direction at all times.

2.  Enter and leave the bus in an orderly manner at the designated bus stop nearest home.

3.  Keep feet, books, band instrument cased, and other objects out of the aisle.

4.  Not deface the bus or its equipment.

5.  Not put head, hands, arms, or legs out of the window, hold any object out of the window, or throw objects within or out of the bus.

6.  Wait for the driver’s signal upon leaving the bus and before crossing in front of the bus.

7.  When students ride in District vehicle or passenger car, seat belts must be fastened at all times.

8.  Misconduct will be punished and bus-riding privileges may be suspended.
